Most Popular Dice of 2017

Every year we like to share some data on the most popular dice of the thousands of dice sets we sold in the previous year. Some things hold steady – like which dice set types are most popular (7-dice sets of course) and which colors are most sought after — but the actual list of dice sets in the top ten change significantly each year.

This data is all based on sales on Awesome Dice, and we’re counting number of purchases for each dice type. This data set is looking at all of 2017 sales.

Most Popular Dice Colors

Most Popular Dice Colors 2017

Most popular dice colors have changed up a bit. Black moved from #4 to become the #3 most popular color, slipping in front of green. White leapt up to #6 from #11, and orange appeared on the list for the first time. Clear dice, meanwhile, fell of the most popular list entirely, and gold’s position fell considerably. The surge in popularity of orange dice is particularly interesting — while certainly far below the leading colors, it didn’t just make it onto the list for the first time, but made it considerably far up the list.

For this data we classify dice by their dominant color: in the case of dice that are black and another color, we credit them to the other color (for example: Gemini Red-Black dice are classified as red dice).

The Most Popular Dice

Okay, enough of aggregate data. Let’s take a look at exactly which dice were the most popular in 2017! For this data we’re ignoring any dice sold as singles (otherwise blank white dice would be #1, followed by blank black and Skull & Crossbones d6).

Pink Ghostly Glow 7-Dice Set

#1: Pink Ghostly Glow

Taking first place by a healthy margin is the Pink Ghostly Glow 7-Dice Set. These dice are unique among glow in the dark dice for two reasons: they glow a soft blue (rather than green) and the swirl texture of the dice shows through in glow in the dark mode. These dice glow more faintly than the standard green glow in the dark dice, but have a truly ghostly quality.

In the light these dice are a pink swirl — and despite the name, description, and alternate photos, we do occasionally get complaints from people who think they have been sent the wrong dice by mistake.

Nebula Blue 7-Dice Set

#2: Nebula Blue 7-Dice Set

Blue is the most popular dice color, and the most popular of the blue dice are the Nebula Blue 7-Dice Set. These are clear dice with inky blue colors drifting through them.

Fun fact about Nebula Blue dice sets: every now and then you get a die that is entirely clear, or darned close to it. Because this would suck to get, Awesome Dice Receiving actually opens every Nebula Blue 7-dice set and replaces any clear dice with an appropriately inky one. As a result we now have a sizable box of clear and nearly clear dice that we’re debating what to do with.

Scarab Jade 7-Dice Set

#3: Scarab Jade 7-Set

The Scarab Jade 7-Dice Set is a personal favorite and one of the best looking green dice sets. The particular combination of green shades in the dice give them an almost metallic sheen.

Borealis Light Green 7-Dice Set

#4:Borealis Light Green 7-Dice Set

Appearing on the top 10 Most Popular list for the first time, Borealis Light Green is a distinctive and attractive soft green color. In the right light the dice have a luminescent quality to them.

Gemini Purple-Teal 7-Dice Set

#5: Gemini Purple-Teal 7-Dice Set

Also appearing on the top 10 list for the first time, the Gemini Purple-Teal show that adding the distinctive Chessex teal color to almost any other color makes it an instant hit.

Gemini Blue-Steel 7-Dice Set

#6: Gemini Blue-Steel 7-Dice Set

The Gemini Blue Steel dice are another blue dice set making the top 10 list. These dice are particularly unique in that all set types sell extremely well: 12d6, 36d6 and even 10d10 sets outperform other colors of the same set type (which isn’t always true of the top 10 dice set winners). It’s also one of the only dice sets to make it onto the top 10 list every year.

Scarab Royal Blue 7-Dice Set

#7: Scarab Royal Blue 7-Dice Set

Here at Awesome Dice we’re big fans of the entire Scarab collection of dice, and Scarab Royal Blue brings follows the blue trend for the #3 most popular dice of 2015.

When viewed closely, these dice are actually a mixture of blue and purple, but from a distance appear just a swirly blue.

Pathfinder Carrion Crown 7-Dice Set

#8: Pathfinder Carrion Crown 7-Dice Set

The dark and creepy dice from the official Pathfinder dice collection bring black dice onto the top 10 list for the very first time. Pathfinder Carrion Crown dice have always been popular, but for some reason last year demand shot up dramatically.

Elven Translucent Red 7-Dice Set

#9: Elven Translucent Red 7-Dice Set

The blue version of these dice have been on the top 10 list before, but this is the first time the Elven Translucent Red have appeared. The dice are actually completely clear and only the inking is red, but because of the intricate elven designs covering each face and the fact that you can see the color through the dice, it gives the illusion that the dice are actually tinted red.

Green Forest 7-Dice Set

#10: Green Forest 7-Dice Set

The Q-Workshop Forest Dice set is particularly attractive, absolutely covered in leaf and vine designs. There is also a brown version of the same design that was on the top 10 list last year — but I think the green version is definitely superior, and is a phenomenal dice choice for druid or ranger characters.

Most Popular Dice Bags & Boxes

As gamers we all love our dice, and we all need something to carry them around in. But just like dice, we gamers want something cool to carry our dice in. So in addition to highlighting the top 10 dice we also take a look at the top 5 most popular dice bags. This year we’re adding dice boxes into the mix with dice bags, since they serve the same function.

Red Celtic Dragon Leather Dice Bag

#1: Red Celtic Leather Dice Bag

We carry leather dice bags with a variety of foil-stamped designs, but the Red Celtic Dragon Leather Dice Bag takes home top prize for popularity. It’s the perfect combination of leather, dragons, runes, and the color of blood.

Black Leather Dice Bag

#2:Black Leather Dice Bag

Our selection of leather dice bags is the most popular kind of dice bag, outselling even the cheap basic dice bags, and the Black Leather Dice Bag leads the pack complete with that rich new leather smell.

The leather dice bags are probably popular just because they’re so much cooler than the basic. But they also hold more dice, and are far more rugged, likely to outlast several generations of basic bags.

Dice Box

#3: Basic Dice Box

The Basic Dice Box is an awesome looking wooden box with a metal latch and accents, all for the price of a dice bag — it’s no wonder this attractive dice box rocketed up onto the top 5 list this year.

Dragon's Eye Dice Box

#4 Dragon’s Eye Dice Box

The hugely popular Dragon’s Eye Dice Box is ornately designed on all sides, completely with glyphs etched into the inside bottom of the dice box. The top is a glass half dome that makes the dragon’s eye appear almost 3-D.

Skull & Crossbones Leather Dice Bag

#5: Skull & Crossbones Leather Dice Bag

Rounding out our top 5 list is the Skull & Crossbones Leather Dice Bag. With the classic skull & crossbones branded into the leather, this dice bag was a hit from the day we first got it in stock.
