Out in the desert, amidst the shifting sands, there is a library. At first glance, it would appear as if this library’s name is literal. It is not on the surface, you see. It is located well beneath and can be found only if it wishes to be. It has dozens of floors, and a circular staircase with hundreds of steps. On its shelves: thousands upon thousands of books, scrolls, and slabs. Despite the earth around it, it is never dim, never moist, and never too dry. The shelves are always free of dust, the halls always cleared of sand. But if the library itself truly were to be forgotten, how could I tell its tale? No, the Forgotten Library gets its name from its inhabitants. Ghosts. Spirits. Wandering the halls, sitting at tables, reading at their leisure. They rarely stop, for they have no need of a break, of meals or rest. And all of them, every last one, are among those who wished to be forgotten.
