Cheap Dice

If you possess a purely logical mind, then the appearance of your dice don't matter. Since all RPG dice roll pretty similarly and all are close enough to random for tabletop gaming purposes, then cheap dice are the only logical choice. This page lists all the cheapest dice available.

Almost all cheap dice are solid opaque colors. The reason for this is there is less waste in the manufacturing process. The manufacturer just tosses in a bunch of one kind of coloring (the plastic they start with is actually clear) and every set comes out looking the same. Since small air bubbles won't be visible, they can cool the dice faster, allowing them to produce more sets per hour, and they don't have any cast-offs common with multi-colored dice when the color mix doesn't work out right. But for the cost conscious, opaque colors provide a cheap dice set option that lets you get your dice for less, or spend just as much and get a lot more dice!

Chessex

Chessex Dice

Chessex dice are all high quality, well-balanced RPG dice that have been trusted by TTRPG fans for decades. Chessex now makes Game Science precision dice. Only Chessex has advanced the dice manufacturing technology necessary to make these sharp-edge precision dice with printed numbers (before Chessex came along, the numbers were inset and uncolored, this due to manufacturing difficulties).

Chessex Borealis Dice

Chessex Pink Borealis Dice

Here at Awesome Dice, we are big fans of Chessex's Borealis series. This series consists of semi-opaque dice with a magical shimmer effect. We currently carry 7-dice sets from this line.

Chessex Gemini Dice

Chessex Gemini Black-Grey Dice

Chessex's Gemini line is the company's most expansive and among one of the most enduring lines in the dice world. Each set contains two colors mixed together with little, if any, blending. The results are awesome! Gemini Black-Shell and Gemini Purple-Teal remain some of the most perpetually popular sets sold here at Awesome Dice.

Chessex Lab Dice

Chessex Lab Dice

In early 2019, Chessex announced that they would begin releasing what they termed their Lab Dice series. Lab Dice are limited-run dice sets produced by Chessex and released in groups. Some of the dice sets have become very sought-after, pushing the secondary market prices of certain sets higher than their original sales price.

Chessex Scarab Dice

Chessex Scarab Blue Blood Dice Set

The Scarab series is one of the most colorfully intriguing lines on the market. A small series compared to some of Chessex's other collections, the Scarab line consists of only 4 color schemes: the subtly intriguing diversity of the dark Blue Blood sets (pictured above); the subdued radiance of the Scarlet sets; the rich, beautiful hues of the Royal Blue sets; and the darkly organic greens of the Jade sets. All sets combine to create a dice series with no weaknesses.

Chessex Vortex Dice

Chessex Vortex Green Dice

Each set in Chessex's Vortex line consists of a mashup of translucence and opaqueness, usually mixed with just a splash of white. The result is a wonderful design that's subtle complexity catches the eye of all who see them. The pictures never do them justice.

Chessex Borealis Dice

Here at Awesome Dice, we are big fans of the Borealis series by Chessex. The series is consists of a semi-opaque dice with a magical shimmer effect. We currently carry the 12d6, 36d6, and 7-dice sets for the Light Green, Pink, and Royal Purple series and also carry the 7-dice set in Smoke.

Transition to new Glitter

The series' old green sparkly pigment was incorporated into the production process of the Euro currency, and thus became unavailable, leaving Chessex to scramble to replace their old glitter with something new. While the old glitter may be unavailable for years, if not forever, the new glitter does slightly alter the dice, although in our opinion the entire series still looks great.

March 2019 - New Set Added to Borealis Lineup

The Maple Green Borealis dice was released by Chessex in March of 2019. Awesome Dice carried this dice, called Maple Green, and it was one of our more popular sets for a few months in 2019.

2020 Addition of Luminary Glow in the Dark Glitter to Borealis Series Dice

In October of 2020, Chessex announced that they were revamping the Borealis lineup by adding their proprietary glow in the dark glitter to all new Borealis Dice. With that announcement, the Purple, Sky Blue, Teal, Royal Purple, Light Green, Teal, and Light Smoke sets will be retired and replaced by new sets–of the same time–but containing glow in the dark glitter.

Chessex Gemini Dice

Chessex's Gemini line is the company's most expansive and one of the most enduring lines in the dice world. Each set consists of two colors, brought together and mixed with little, if any, blending of the colors. The results are awesome! The Gemini Black/Shell and Purple/Teal, for example, are perpetually some of the most popular sets we sell here at Awesome Dice.

Awesome Dice carries numerous sets in the Chessex Gemini collection, including 7-Dice Sets, 12d6 Sets, 10d10 Sets, and 36d6 Sets. Additionally, we carry a number of single Gemini dice in our Single Polyhedral Dice section.

We think you'll love the Gemini sets we have available here at Awesome Dice. Enjoy shopping!

Cleric Dice

A Cleric Weighs In on What Makes Good Cleric Dice

For cleric dice, I look for soft colors with metallic numbers. White/cream or pastel yellow, pink, green, or blue are what I tend towards, and who doesn't want a bold gold, silver, or copper number showing your god healed you for max hp? If it has sparkles or swirls of glittering color inside the resin to show the divine power within, even better!

Cthulhu Dice Sets & Accessories

Every little touch adds to and heightens that eerie, foreboding, and maddening feeling, letting you know that this is more than just another hack and slash game. A thematically matching set of dice is one such way to add that extra touch!

Grab yourself a Cthulhu 7-Dice set or a dice bag and get ready for the descent into madness. Cthulhu fhtagn!

D&D Probability

The Dungeons & Dragons probability generator will determine exactly what the probability of getting a success is for D&D or any other d20 game, including Pathfinder. Unlike most RPGs, D&D does not actually have a probability curve; instead it has a probability line. This means the odds of getting a perfectly average success are exactly the same as the odds of rolling a crit or the odds of rolling a 1. In D&D terms, this means that your chances of rolling a 1, or a 20, or a 10, are excatly the same.

Thus the only factor in calculating the probability is what the target number you need to reach is, and what your skill modifier is.

Dungeons & Dragons Probability Calculator

To use this calculator simply enter the DC to succeed with an attack or a skill roll. Then enter your total skill bonus, taking both skill points, attribute modifier, and any other modifiers into account.

So if you wanted to calculate the probability of hitting an orc you'd enter the orc's AC (let's say it's 16) and if your fighter has a +3 base attack bonus, and an additional +2 from his strength, his total skill bonus would be 5. So you enter 16 as the DC, and 5 as the skill bonus, and discover that you have a 50% chance of success on any given roll.

D&D Failure and Auto Success Chances

It's worth noting that in D&D you always have a 5% chance of failure, since a roll of a 1 always fails. Furthermore you always have a 5% chance of success, since a roll of 20 is always a success.

Curated Dice Collections by DnD Class

If you are looking for that special set of dice for your character, Awesome Dice has created specially curated dice sets for several of the DnD player classes (more in the works). Select your player's class below to help you find that perfect dice set:

Dungeons & Dragons (DnD)

DND Dice

Generally considered the granddaddy of all role-playing games, Dungeons & Dragons established the 7-dice set that has become the standard for hundreds of different RPGs since.

Dungeons & Dragons has gone through many different iterations through the decades, awarding the game a grand total of 6 different editions (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 3.5, 4th, and 5th). Throughout it all, the 7-dice set has remained the standard for DnD. A good set of dice is precious, as it can determine the very fate of your character.

While we use the same set of dice today, today's dice are by no means visually identical to the dice used in the 70s and 80s. The original DnD box sets came with a set of 7 plain, opaque dice with numbers players needed to color in themselves. Let me tell you, we here at Awesome Dice are pretty thrilled with how far DnD dice have come since then!

Today, players can buy high-quality dice ranging from colorfully elaborate to tactfully simple. The dice of today are limited only by peoples' imagination (and, you know, the amount of space on/within a single die, but I digress). Translucent dice, speckled dice, metal dice, dice with small objects set inside, dice made of glass, wood, and gemstones, you name it! There's a myriad of premium dice sets available and we're lucky enough to be one company capable of providing!

It's always a good time to be playing Dungeons & Dragons, the oldest and still largest RPG.

What Dice Do I Need for DnD?

The standard 7-dice set forms the basis for many tabletop role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons. The 7-dice set consists of a d4, d6, d8, d10, d%, d12, and d20. As you might have guessed, the "d" present in the name of each die stands for "die" or "dice," depending on the amount present. The number that follows the letter "d" reflects the number of sides present on that specific die. (Curious about the d%? Read on to learn more!)

Each die is important and will be used at different times and in different situations throughout the game, depending on the circumstances your character is involved in and what action your character is looking to take.

The d4

The d4 traditionally resembles that of a pyramid. This little guy is used in several spells found throughout DnD. When your character is wielding smaller weapons like clubs and daggers, this dice also helps determine the amount of damage an attack delivers. As an example, if you were to successfully land an attack with a dagger, you'd then roll a d4 to determine how much damage you dealt your enemy.

Just be careful not to leave one of these on the floor! Stepping on a d4 will make you wish you had stepped on a Lego!

The d6

The cubic d6 is the die most people visualize when someone says "dice." Six-sided and numbered 1 - 6, the d6 can be used to calculate the damage of a melee attack, the damage or effect of a spell, and more. Most notably, the d6 is often heavily relied upon during the character creation process, as it can be used to determine a character's attributes. It is often true that the use of a single spell or weapon may require more than a single die, but the d6 in particular can make this readily apparent right from the start. It never hurts to have more than one d6.

The d8

If you put two pyramid-shaped d4s together, you'll get something that resembles a d8. Among other things, the d8 is used to determine the amount of damage dealt by light crossbows and larger melee weapons like the Morningstar and Longsword. There are several spells that similarly require a roll of one d8 or more to determine the amount of damage dealt.

The d10 and the Percentile Die (d%)

The d10 is a versatile die. Like all other dice mentioned thus far, the d10 can be used to determine the amount of damage and/or depth of a magical effect dealt with a weapon or spell. Regarding weapon damage, a d10 is usually paired with larger and heavier weapons like a Pike or Halberd. But when paired with a d%, the d10 has another use.

The d% looks identical to the d10 but for one exception. Where the surface of a d10 is numbered 0 - 9 (the 0 representing the 10), the surface of the d% is marked 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, and 00.

When rolled together, the d10 and the d% can be used to conduct a percentile roll. Roll both dice and simply add the number on the d10 to the number on the d% to get your percentage. Rolling a 6 and a 70 will get you 76%. Rolling a 5 and a 0 will get you 5%. The only exception to this rule is rolling two zeroes: that's 100%.

Percentile rolls are called for during a number of different occasions in DnD. It can determine the percentile chance of a random event occurring, what random magic item a character obtains, how spectacularly a character fails or succeeds, and so much more. It can also be used as a simple tie breaker. Stuck on which of the two evenly-qualified, interested parties should be allowed to keep the new, enchanted sword? Assign one player to the high numbers and the other to the low and let the dice decide!

Don't have a d%? In this event, you can achieve the same result by rolling two d10 (2d10) or simply by rolling a single d10 twice.

The d12

Comparatively the least-used die in Dungeons & Dragons, the d12 is used to determine the damage of a limited number of heavy weapons such as the Greataxe. Some weapons may even level up to replace their original damage dice with that of a d12. A d12 also comes in handy in a few specific circumstances when dealing with the time of day or time of year. When you think about it, it's easy to see how it correlates: 12-sided die, 12 months in a year, 12 hours in a day and in a night.

The d20

You'll want to keep this dice close at hand. You'll likely use it more than any other die in the 7-dice set. The d20 is used in a wide variety of different scenarios. In stark contrast to the other dice present in the 7-dice set, the d20 is the only die you are unlikely to ever use to determine damage. It is, however, used to determine whether or not any attack made, be it with a weapon or a spell, actually hits an opponent. Each opponent you face will have a predetermined Armor Class (AC). Many different things can affect an individual's AC, but the gist of it is that said individual will have a number you have to beat in order to land a hit. Enemy has a 15 AC? You will need to roll at or above a 15, depending on your Dungeon Master's discretion, or this enemy takes no damage. Some Dungeon Masters strictly require you roll over an enemy's AC: meeting it will not be enough.

The d20 is also used in saving throws and ability checks. A high enough roll during a saving throw means your character avoids taking some or all damage, dodges out of the way of a projectile, remains on his/her feet, and much more. A high enough roll on an ability check means your character succeeds in what they were attempting to do or perceive. Roll too low on your Stealth ability check and your attempt to sneak past a dozing guard will fail.

Dragonscale Dice Bags

Let's be blunt here -- the Dragonscale Dice Bags are the coolest dice bags in the world. I mean, you can see the picture right? That's what they're like in real life too, except you can run your hand along the scales and watch them move and look cool up close as they protect your dice.

The dragonscale dice bags are hand knitted with anodized aluminum scales knitted into the bag to give the appearance of dragon scales. The scales are only on the outside of the bag, and the inside is nice soft yarn so that your dice will not get scuffed up or marred by the metal. The bottom interior of the large versions have a plastic disc to hold the bottom open, which can be removed if you so desire. The drawstring for the dice bags is leather of an appropriate color.

The dragonscale dice bags come in two sizes: big and awesome and expensive, and small and less awesome and less expensive, but still pretty awesome. The large version is capable of holding up to 100 standard 16mm dice, and the small one is appropriate for a couple sets of dice.

These dragonscale dice bags will make you the envy of everyone at the gaming table. The first reaction of the other gamers when you sit down will be to exclaim how cool it is, then they'll want to touch it, and then they'll want to know where you got it. You can tell them that you fought a dragon, cast a miniaturization spell on it, and then slew it. Or you can send them to us and we'll sell them one that isn't quite as cool as yours.

* No dragons were harmed in the creation of these dice bags.

Druid Dice

Recommendations for Druid Dice

A Druid can have several different variations to their setup, whether they focus on wild shaping into ever increasingly dangerous beasts to harnessing the frighteningly destructive might of nature magic, they can be a truly unique Class dependent on the players wielding them.

For a good set of dice, the set should match the aspect of that PC which highlights the unique choices made up until that point. If the Druid relies on ice spells, a frosty dice set with blue numbers is ideal, or perhaps the winter season set with a clear body and snowflakes set within. If they wild shape into a Dire Wolf then their dice should display a wild, dark pattern with highly contrasting numbers to represent the duality of the beast and hero within. And above all, the dice should never be metal. That just wouldn’t be kosher.

- Matt Saddoris (Celomak Omion – Lvl 8 Druid)

My favorite 5th edition player class would be that of the druid. In previous editions, the druid was rarely played in any of my games because they were considered weak. In the 5th edition, however, they are quite strong and very interesting. I have seen quite a few sites making dice that coincide with the druid's ties to nature (green and plants), but I have not seen ANY that deal with the druid's relationship to the animal realm. While this opens up far more options (even sticking to the commonly used animal companions), I would like to something that incorporates the animal and nature aspects. I think a good set of druid dice, for example, could include dark green or blue/green dice with hints of the different shades of a wolf (greys, blues, and browns) as well as possibly making the "1" a wolf head. Similar techniques could be applied to other animals.
